The Journal of Chromatography A special CCC issue based on the presentations given at the CCC2008 meeting in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, has been shaping up over the last few months. The first paper to be accepted for the special issue was apparently, “Excellent combination of counter-current chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography to separate galactolipids from pumpkin,” submitted by Qizhen Du, Zhiguo Jiang, and Daijie Wang. The introduction extols the health benefits of a diet rich in the Curcurbita moschata fruit. I would like to add that pumpkin juice plays an important role in the social gatherings of Hogwarts, the wizarding school of Harry Potter fame. An unusual feature of this particular article is two figures devoted to displaying the CCC elution profiles on 14 TLC plates. This is something that you will never see with those exorbant ultra HPLC separations. CCC uses have plenty of material with which to spot TLC. They are, after all, separating gram quantities of pumpkin extract. The bottom line is that CCC users don’t need fancy Corona discharge or MS/MS triple quad detectors to see their compounds elute. TLC works just fine, thank you!
